On Saturday, April 19, about 9,000 people will witness the descent of the Holy Fire at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, while thousands more will wait for the fire outside the city walls, reports Politeka.
"Up to 9,000 people can be inside the church at the same time. Entry to the church for the ceremony will be permitted to everyone who has received the appropriate documentation. For those without passes, designated areas with tents and chairs have been set up so they can watch the ceremony live," said Israeli police representative Michael Zingerman.
This year, Orthodox and Catholic Easter fall on the same day, and during this time, Passover is also being celebrated in Jerusalem.
"The goal of the police is to ensure freedom of religion for thousands of Christians and to carry out the ceremony safely. During these days, hundreds of officers from the Jerusalem District Police will ensure security and public order in the Old City area. Access routes to the Old City and everything happening inside are being closely monitored," noted Michael Zingerman.
To attend the Holy Fire ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, pilgrims must have permits issued by religious denominations. Last year, about 6,000 people were present at the ceremony, in 2023 – 2,400 people, and during the time of restrictions – about 1,000 people.
It is worth noting that the descent of the Holy Fire has always drawn global attention. It is believed that if the Holy Fire does not descend, it would signal the end of human history.
