The European Union may reach a decision on the legal status of Ukrainian refugees as early as June, this issue remains highly relevant since the current temporary protection regime for Ukrainians is in effect until March 2026.
This was stated by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala during a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Prague. According to Fiala, the Czech Republic has taken in the highest number of Ukrainians per capita, with 160,000 of them already officially employed:
“We cannot wait until the last minute. In June, a meeting of the Council of EU Interior Ministers will take place, and I hope that a European position will be defined and a decision proposed. We always emphasize that proposals will depend on how the situation develops.”
Status of Ukrainian Refugees in Europe: As is known, following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation in February 2022, the EU activated the Temporary Protection Directive.
This directive grants Ukrainian refugees the right to reside in EU countries, access the labor market, education, healthcare, and social services. The protection status was later extended until March 4, 2026.
According to Eurostat, as of the end of November, 4.2 million Ukrainians had temporary protection status in EU countries. The largest numbers were received by Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic.
