In the winter, the administration of US President Donald Trump "urged" the Ukrainian authorities to accept "an unspecified number" of citizens of other countries deported from the United States.
This is reported by The Washington Post with reference to the documents. Journalists were surprised to note that this is a unique request for a country at war and dependent on US military and financial support.
However, the documents do not indicate how the Ukrainian leadership reacted to such a request, which was transmitted by a high-ranking American diplomat.
The publication notes that Ukraine has not accepted third-country citizens from the United States, and there are no signs that it will do so. Two Ukrainian officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that this topic is not being considered seriously.
As the publication pointed out, former US officials said that the dialogue between the White House and Ukraine on the issue of deportations was unusual and not part of normal diplomatic work.
On April 13, it became known that Trump plans to deport a million migrants this year. Analysts say that available statistics make this goal unrealistic, or even impossible.
And on April 16, Trump announced a "self-deportation" program. The government will work with immigrants so that they can return to the United States "if they behave well."
