Former member of the Polish governments, Piotr Kulpа, explained why Poland's presidency of the European Union did not become a triumph for Ukraine’s integration, as reported by Politeka.
He shared his views on the program "Dialogues" with Ruslan Bortnyk.
"I do not share that opinion. In reality, this period coincided with political processes, as there were elections (editor’s note – in Poland). But what was achieved? First, EU funds will be allocated to defense and to the infrastructure of NATO’s eastern flank. That’s a major plus. Second, aid for Ukraine will be counted as defense spending within the EU framework. That’s another plus. And we are talking about European solidarity, which is the litmus test for the continent’s survival," explained Piotr Kulpa.
He noted that currently there is a rift between the United States and Europe within transatlantic relations. Everyone understands, the guest emphasized, that this is politically dividing Europe and only benefits Putin.
"But here, support for Ukraine is the common denominator that demonstrates Europe’s intellectual and moral capacity to survive as a geopolitical entity in the context of the global game," Kulpa stated.
In addition, he said, a turning point was the EU’s decision to limit the import of energy resources from Russia. This will now become the core, fundamental, and principled feature of European energy policy. Nevertheless, he admitted, this decision came late, as the restriction will only take effect in 2027 — but even so, it is a significant success.
