Political analyst Andriy Zolotarev stated that Europe could have spent its money not on Russian oil and gas, but on helping Ukraine. It could have closed the skies over Ukraine, provided more aircraft, but it is not ready to do so, according to Politeka.
He made these comments on Ruslan Bortnyk's channel.
When it comes to the West’s willingness to provide more support to Ukraine, the expert notes, the numbers speak for themselves: during the years of full-scale war, Europe has spent significantly more on purchasing Russian gas and oil than on assisting Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
“Secondly, comfortable and safe times produce weak people. That’s why a German burgher is not ready to fight and freeze in a trench. Back in the 1970s, there was a joke that history had flipped: Jews, once the best merchants, had become the best soldiers, and Germans, once the best soldiers, had become the best merchants. So the West definitely won’t make major sacrifices or risk its own security for Ukraine,” Zolotarev explains.
In his view, if the West had truly been willing, it could have at least closed the skies over Ukraine to Russian attacks, as it did with Iran, or could have supplied Ukraine with aircraft as early as 2022 — the technical capabilities existed. As the expert notes, in Tucson, there's an entire "graveyard" of aviation equipment with over 5,000 aircraft, and some of them are still in usable condition.
“They could have sent over those same F-16s back in 2022. And as for pilots — a private military company or retired pilots could have signed up. In 2022, this could have been a game changer — Ukraine using aircraft on a large scale, for example, in the Kherson direction. Back then, there were no Surovikin Line fortifications, and this could have resulted in Russia losing its land corridor to Crimea. That possibility existed, but it never happened,” Zolotarev claims.
