Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained that the U.S. organized the meeting in Alaska in a way intended to soften Russia’s stance, while Putin said what Trump wanted to hear — and nevertheless, they reached some kind of agreement, reports Politeka.
He shared this in his blog.
“Right now, many media outlets, especially liberal ones, are practically bursting with commentary on how lavishly Trump received Putin in Alaska. Two planes parked on the airfield, both presidents descending simultaneously, a red carpet, effectively a mini military parade with armored vehicles on the runway and a flyover, hugs, jokes, smiles… Like classmates reuniting after 20 or 30 years,” notes Ruslan Bortnik.
Nevertheless, he emphasizes, this display should not be misleading, as it is also a deliberate tactic — Trump’s attempt to show Putin what U.S.-Russia relations could look like if they reach mutual understanding, if Russia reduces its confrontational stance toward the U.S., and if Russia accepts the rules and conditions set by Washington. In addition, the expert says, all of this was meant to create a warm atmosphere to encourage the Russian leadership to make concessions during negotiations.
At the same time, Putin also tried to win Trump over as much as possible to preserve or even improve their relationship. As the expert recalls, during the press conference, Putin touched on all of Trump's sensitive points: he said he was glad Trump survived the assassination attempt, expressed belief that the 2020 election was rigged, and recalled the U.S.-Soviet victory in World War II.
“Trump’s subsequent actions — two strategic shifts — the withdrawal of previously voiced threats and sanctions, and agreement to the Russian model of resolution in the form of a full-fledged peace agreement rather than a ceasefire, indicate that there is an agreement. Yes, it may not be final, not everything is settled, there are issues the parties cannot agree on, and some that the U.S. does not want to discuss or take responsibility for. The U.S. wants to shift the responsibility for these agreements onto Zelensky, Ukraine, and Europe,” Ruslan Bortnik concludes.
