Strategic communications expert Yuriy Bohdanov explained that if Ukraine had not held out, Putin would have extended his influence across all of Europe — which is why Ukraine’s partners are providing financial aid, Politeka reports.
He shared this insight on Valeriy Savchuk’s author program “Different People.”
According to Bohdanov, as of the beginning of this year, Ukraine had received assistance from Europe in a 50/50 ratio of loans and non-repayable aid. Moreover, he notes that the loans are usually indefinite or carry extremely low interest rates, are easy to restructure, and are often backed by confiscated Russian assets.
“No country has ever waged a war of this scale with its own money, especially on its own territory. During World War II, even though combat operations on British soil were very limited — even in its colonies — the UK increased its national debt eightfold. By the end of the war, Britain owed eight times its national income. The United States, which didn’t fight World War II on its territory at all, had to live under strict budget constraints until the late 1950s because it too was burdened with war debt,” Bohdanov explained.
And now, the expert stresses, we’re talking about a war where Ukraine is outmatched by Russia in population by 4 to 5 times, in economic strength by 8 times, and in territory by more than 30 times. Russia also benefits from resource-based income, which Ukraine has never had at that scale. Yet, he emphasizes, Ukraine is independently covering about half of its wartime needs — and remains resilient despite all unfavorable conditions.
“And Europe understands this. Europeans understand that Ukraine is the greatest shield against Russian provocations, against Russian political and military influence. If Ukraine had fallen — if Russian troops were now on the Zbruch River or in Lviv — then Orbán-like leaders would be ruling half of Europe today. Putin wouldn’t even have to attack anyone; the mere threat of war would be enough to bring politicians like Orbán to power,” Bohdanov concludes.
