Political analyst Ruslan Bortnyk stated that nothing strategically significant occurred at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, but warned that if China, India, and Russia consolidate, it could pose serious problems for the West, Politeka reports.
He shared these insights in his blog.
"There was no visible strategic breakthrough at this summit. But clearly, a turning point is underway—the panda has transformed into a dragon before our eyes. However, the dragon isn’t biting yet, just hissing occasionally. It’s the transformation of the panda into a dragon, and its unification with the elephant and the bear," Bortnyk emphasizes.
According to the expert, if Russia, China, and India were to potentially consolidate their economies and security policies, the U.S. and Europe would find themselves at a major disadvantage in terms of economics, technology, and military power. He notes that the combined nuclear potential of Russia, China, and India already exceeds that of Western countries—and the same is increasingly true for economic and technological capacity.
However, Bortnyk observes that India, for now, seems more interested in leveraging its position to pressure the West—essentially saying: either treat us as equals, or we’ll move closer to China. Yet, he adds, a full shift toward China still seems unlikely. Despite China and India resuming air travel and working to re-establish political and economic ties, significant issues remain, such as border disputes and broader geopolitical competition.
"So for now, it's a dance—it’s the Global South’s disco, but with winks and hints that the party might continue later at someone’s home. Still, this is not yet an alliance, and not even a full-fledged relationship," Bortnyk concludes.
