Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained how to interpret Trump's statement that Ukraine will have to make a deal — whether it's a proposal or an ultimatum, according to Politeka.

According to the expert, it was not an ultimatum, because if you look at the original version of the statement, and not just the quote circulating on Telegram, Trump said it in a neutral tone — just stating that Ukraine will have to make a deal. In fact, he says this regularly. That is to say, Bortnik explains, there was no attack on Zelensky in this statement — Trump was simply reiterating his position that Ukraine will eventually have to reach a compromise.
“If you say someone will have to do something, without saying what will happen if they don’t — that’s not an ultimatum. It’s more of a personal stance, an attempt to express one’s preferences, but not coercion or pressure. Trump isn’t saying that if Ukraine doesn’t agree to a deal, he’ll impose sanctions, stop arms sales, or do something drastic. No. And I agree — Zelensky will have to strike a deal. The only questions are when, and on what terms,” Bortnik explains.
As for Trump’s claims about hatred between him and Zelensky, the expert notes that the personal element in this conflict accounts for about 30–50%. If you listen to the aggressive statements from the presidents of Ukraine and Russia toward each other, he says, much of it is driven by personal ambition — attempts to destroy, punish, and prove strength to the world.
“Wherever leadership-style models dominate, there’s always conflict. Where cold calculation prevails, there’s no war. Just look at China. Could they take Taiwan? Sure — they could have done it long ago, right? But they haven’t, because they’re calculating losses and profits and figuring it’s not worth it. But in Israel, Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S., leadership-driven models dominate — and in those, things are done because it’s deemed reputationally, historically, and socially ‘the right thing to do,’” Bortnik concludes.
