Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that the West has finally aligned its position: a ceasefire. Meanwhile, Russia’s stance remains rooted in terror — something Trump has yet to punish, reports Politeka.
He shared his views in a recent blog post.
“The first and foremost step is to halt the fighting. This is now a coordinated and consolidated position of the West. And Trump voiced this — he posted about it on his social media platform, Truth Social. The same position was echoed in statements by leaders of major European countries, and Ukraine has also endorsed it. That’s it. This is our current position. Even what Bloomberg reports about the 12-point plan being proposed by the Europeans for Ukraine — you could say, regardless of the details, it has been taken as a basis. So the top priority is a ceasefire,” Musiienko stated.
However, he notes, this does not sit well with Russia. They reject the idea of a ceasefire and demand that the Ukrainian Armed Forces withdraw from Donetsk Oblast. According to the expert, it's not that Russia has gained any overwhelming military capacity to shift the situation on the front — no. But the enemy senses it can succeed in targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
As for Trump’s possible response to delays and stalling, Musiienko reminds readers that the Russians have already seen how the U.S. president tends to postpone or forget his threats. There were talks of sanctions in response to threats against Alaska, and more recently — about Tomahawk missiles. In the end, there were no sanctions, no missiles, and no ceasefire.
“Still, it would be very good for us if the only item on the agenda of a possible — though not yet finalized — meeting between Putin and Trump was a ceasefire along the front line. Under the current circumstances, that wouldn’t be the worst-case scenario for us,” Musiienko asserts.
The main thing, he emphasizes, is to preserve Ukraine’s will, independence, and sovereignty, and not allow Putin to dictate his terms. Therefore, a ceasefire along the front line — even if it includes temporarily occupied territories — wouldn’t be such a bad outcome.
