Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman explained that statements about progress after each round of negotiations resemble Brezhnevism — when everything was bad, but everyone pretended it was good, Politeka reports.

As the expert notes, a discussion about the negotiations in Geneva should begin with a Soviet metaphorical joke about how people behaved in the same situation under different leaders. As he recounts, when Vladimir Lenin was on a train and there were no rails ahead, he would organize a субботник (volunteer work day); under Joseph Stalin — there would be executions; under Leonid Brezhnev — they would cover the windows, jump up and down, and say how well the train was moving; and under Mikhail Gorbachev — they would lean out the window and shout: “There are no rails ahead.” According to the expert, at the beginning of the war Ukrainians were full of optimism, while in Russia Stalinist methods were at work, and now, he says, “we have Brezhnev.”
“The Americans first and foremost, and the Russians as well, are trying to make us draw the curtains, sway back and forth, and say: ‘We are negotiating, we are close to peace.’ Although there are no rails ahead. Where is this path to peace? Has anyone seen it? Where are the rails? There are no rails ahead. Where is the Gorbachev who will say: ‘There are no rails ahead’? And we need a Gorbachev not for Russia, but on a global scale — someone who will at least begin by saying that there are no rails ahead and will stop forcing us to jump around and talk about how wonderfully we are conducting peace negotiations,” Mikhail Sheitelman explains.
After the talks in Geneva, Steve Witkoff, he says, declared that there had been enormous progress and that both sides had agreed to inform their leaders and continue working toward reaching an agreement. According to the expert, this statement speaks for itself.
