Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman said that last year the United States voted against a resolution condemning Russia’s aggression, but this year it abstained because global pressure is working, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on his blog.
“The vote on the February 24 anniversary concerned a United Nations resolution condemning Russian military aggression, demanding that Russia withdraw all troops from the occupied territories, and recognizing Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. For the second year in a row, the United States has tried to block this resolution,” Mikhail Sheitelman notes.
Last time, he recalls, the U.S. proposed an alternative resolution that was blocked by everyone. This time, they decided to act with a scalpel — that is, to push for the removal of the clause on Ukraine’s territorial integrity from the resolution that is voted on every year. In other words, the expert argues, the Americans already want both Donbas and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
“But it didn’t work again — and this time it failed very painfully for the Americans. Last year, the U.S. voted against the resolution recognizing the aggressive war, the occupation, and so on. At that time, America voted against it together with Israel and several other countries: Iran, North Korea, and so on. And what about today? America did not dare to vote against this resolution and abstained. So global and public pressure on America has worked after all. It’s not exactly fitting for Americans to be in the same boat as the Iranians,” comments Mikhail Sheitelman.
According to him, 107 countries voted in favor of the resolution. The United States and Israel were no longer on Russia’s side, but the list of opponents still included Belarus, North Korea, Iran, Cuba, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Eritrea, Mali, Sudan, Nicaragua, and Niger. Meanwhile, China, Armenia, India, Kazakhstan, the United Arab Emirates, and many others abstained.
