Xi made Southeast Asia his first overseas visit this year, the authors said, seeking to prevent countries in the region from making deals with the US that could hinder China.
“China and Malaysia will work together with countries in the region to fight the undercurrents of geopolitical and bloc-based confrontation. Together, we will safeguard the bright future of our Asian family,” Xi Jinping said in Malaysia’s administrative capital, Putrajaya.
In a joint statement released on Thursday, China and Malaysia agreed to deepen cooperation in industry, logistics, digital technology and human capital. The two sides pledged to implement the Five-Year Plan for Economic and Trade Cooperation and build a “high-level strategic Malaysia-China community.”
Before his visit to Cambodia, the Chinese leader published a column in the local press in which he again, albeit indirectly, criticized the United States. He called for “resisting hegemony and power politics” and condemned any attempts by outsiders to interfere in the internal affairs of countries in the region.
Xi’s statements came against the backdrop of an escalating trade war between Beijing and Washington. As noted in Bloomberg, the United States is preparing to call on other countries to take measures to limit China's production capacity, in particular, to introduce so-called secondary tariffs on Chinese goods in exchange for tariff concessions.
On April 16, the White House announced that it would impose tariffs of up to 245% on imports from China to the United States.
