Political scientist Ruslan Bortnyk explained that the current elections in Romania are not just a question of the country's next president, but a struggle between conservatives and liberals in Europe, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this in his blog.
According to the expert, Simion is very similar to Georgescu, but he is a more systematic politician, not such an upstart, and his party "Alliance for the Unification of Romanians" is not center-right, but right-wing, they say that Bukovina is Romanian territory, that Moldova should be annexed in general. In addition, he reminds us, Simion came to the polling station with Georgescu, that is, he is a parasite on the rating of the former presidential candidate and has every chance of winning.
"The eyes of all of Europe are now on Romania, because there is a crazy struggle between conservatives and liberals. Liberals are trying to prevent Romania from becoming an ideological ally of Hungary, Slovakia, and perhaps even Poland. And Romania is a large country, yes, poor, yes, not very well-regulated from the point of view of Europe, but large and influential within the EU. Its influence is less noticeable for us, but it is somewhere at the level of Poland," explains Ruslan Bortnyk.
If the conservatives win, he warns, then liberal Brussels and the European Commission will find themselves in a very difficult situation, because a full-fledged alternative conservative center will form within the EU, which will be oriented towards Trump. By the way, the expert adds, this entire rightward shift is also a consequence of Trump's victory.
The "Alliance for the Unity of Romanians" is similar to the "Alternative for Germany", but still it is a little more radical. "And it is similar to the Hungarian Fidesz, even more radical. If Simion wins, he will be the most right-wing president in Europe," Ruslan Bortnyk emphasizes.
