Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik explained that the goal of the negotiations in Istanbul is not to reach an agreement, but to demonstrate a desire for peace, not to quarrel with Trump and to fight with swords, Politeka reports.

As the expert notes, if we look back at the last 10 days, we will see that events have been developing quite actively: first, Russia proposed a 3-day truce, then Ukraine proposed a 30-day one, in response, Putin put forward the idea of direct negotiations, and Zelensky agreed. But, he emphasizes, this is not some kind of strategy, but a reaction to the opponent's actions, an attempt to seize the initiative and put him in an awkward position, force him to make concessions.
"This is an act of struggle. There is no discussion between the parties, there are no specific points. Everything that sounds more or less specific is coming from somewhere across the ocean. Some proposals fly from there. Here we see a fight with sabres or swords. Everyone is trying to dodge, strike, and perform a move again,” explains Ruslan Bortnik.
Therefore, he claims, the negotiations in Istanbul may turn into another attempt to strike, but there is no goal to reach an agreement. Instead, the expert states, there is a goal to continue to demonstrate a desire for peace, maintain relations with the United States, not quarrel with Trump, and continue to fight with swords.
“Will it turn out that these negotiations simply will not happen even if the delegations are physically present? They will turn into some kind of political confrontation, including a public one, or the issuance of ultimatums, or they will move to the technical level of consultations without the participation of leading political figures,” Ruslan Bortnik reasons.
