Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that under the Trump administration, U.S. foreign policy has become more emotional and less rational, particularly regarding the Russia–Ukraine war, Politeka reports.

According to the expert, the U.S. Secretary of State has emphasized that there is no need to overreact to the upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin, as many media outlets are doing, suggesting that Trump is ready to follow Putin's lead and fulfill all his whims. As Rubio explained, the purpose of the meeting is to clarify positions and look Putin in the eye.
“I used to think that American politics was based on analysis, on a certain degree of rationality, on facts and evidence, while emotions were secondary. But now emotions are being presented almost as a priority — that one must look Putin in the eye and understand him,” Oleksandr Musiienko emphasizes.
The expert notes that it's important to remember that Putin has been in power for over a quarter of a century and has outlasted more than one president. Many have looked him in the eye, and it led to nothing. He reminds us that Putin had talks with George W. Bush, then there was the “reset” of relations with Russia during the Obama administration, followed by the meeting with Trump in Helsinki, and Biden also met with the Kremlin leader. And now Trump is once again preparing to look him in the eye in search of a desire for peace.
“Rubio further says that it’s essential to finally understand whether Russia — and Putin personally — is ready to end this aggressive and horrific war against Ukraine. That should be the focus of the meeting. Rubio does not foresee any mandatory decisions being made as a result of this summit between Trump and Putin. That’s also a fact. And let’s be honest — that sounds somewhat reassuring to us, because it’s not about making some tectonic, fateful, strategic decisions right away, especially without Ukraine,” Oleksandr Musiienko concludes.
