Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that negotiations in Alaska may not produce any results, but Europeans are concerned that Trump and Putin could strike some kind of deal, Politeka reports.

He shared these thoughts in his blog.

As the expert notes, Trump himself said that after meeting with Putin, he wants to hold a trilateral meeting involving Zelenskyy, which is the right move, because on many issues — particularly those concerning territories — it's impossible to talk without Ukraine. However, Musiienko adds that Trump also said the first meeting would be more of a preparation for the second.

“Trump is already publicly expressing doubts about achieving any kind of breakthrough during the first meeting with Putin — some media outlets are reporting this as well. Even Trump is beginning to voice doubts. Clearly, they are receiving certain signals from Russia, assessing what Putin may or may not agree to. Intelligence agencies are working, the State Department is working, think tanks are analyzing the situation. They're providing relevant information, which apparently indicates that Russia currently does not have the forward-looking position that both we and the U.S. would like to see. Therefore, the illusion of productive talks in Alaska is already being seriously questioned,” Musiienko observes.

At the same time, The Economist, the expert notes, writes that Trump has not convinced European partners that the U.S. is fully on Ukraine’s side and that no shady deal will be made in Alaska. The Telegraph, he adds, is also reporting on this.

“There may still be some kind of deal; something could be negotiated in Alaska. Unfortunately, there is no clear sense of trust here. And that’s a problem — a lack of trust harms the normal development of relations and future cooperation. No matter how things play out, Trump is not removing the issue of territories, the status of the occupied territories, or the possibility of so-called exchanges from the agenda. This issue remains in discussion, which, of course, is cause for concern,” Oleksandr Musiienko concludes.
