Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained that while some progress in the negotiations has been made thanks to Trump—some concessions have been reached—this does not mean that the war will end anytime soon, Politeka reports.
He discussed this in his blog.
"We are witnessing continued progress in the negotiation process, albeit slower. And I believe Trump is very systematic, consistent, and persistent in promoting the model of resolution that he believes is the right one," said Ruslan Bortnik.
According to him, Trump currently has two “baskets” of achievements. The first was gathered in Alaska, where he persuaded Putin to reduce territorial demands to a withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces only from the Donetsk region, and also secured agreement that Ukraine would receive security guarantees from Western partners.
At the Washington meeting with Zelensky and European leaders, the expert notes, Trump secured consent for peace talks without a ceasefire, and Ukraine expressed readiness to discuss territorial issues. More specifics will follow in upcoming meetings.
It is clear, he states, that the sides are approaching the final rounds of this phase of negotiations—provided the planned meetings take place. Meanwhile, Bortnik adds, the team of U.S. Secretary of State Rubio is beginning its work. It will focus on developing security guarantees for Ukraine, possibly drawing on the model proposed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
"That’s why there is, without a doubt, tangible progress—but this does not mean the negotiations will be successful. It does not mean they will conclude quickly. It doesn’t even mean the war will end anytime soon. But there is real progress and a way out of the negotiation deadlock, the bear trap between the parties that we have witnessed in recent years," Ruslan Bortnik concludes.
