International political analyst Maksym Yali explained that the Trump administration misinterprets the Kremlin's statements, mistaking Russia’s failures on the battlefield for a willingness to make concessions, Politeka reports.
He discussed this in his blog.
According to the expert, recent statements by Lavrov and the Kremlin in general about an alleged softening of their position — such as the supposed de facto recognition of Zelensky as the president of Ukraine, followed inevitably by a “but” — are all tactical maneuvers. As he explains, the goal is to maintain the illusion of readiness for peace and, in the short term, to prevent the introduction of secondary sanctions on Russian oil and its key buyers.
“If we translate it from diplomatic language to plain speech, the Kremlin is still just trying to stall and buy time, and it is not ready to end the war — but now it's doing so in a less harsh and straightforward manner than before. They’ve softened the messaging to create the illusion for Trump that the Kremlin remains engaged in the negotiation process and is ready to make significant concessions to achieve peace,” Yali explains.
However, he notes, the Kremlin still demands territorial concessions — the withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, specifically from the non-occupied parts of Donetsk region that Russian troops have failed to capture, as well as recognition of the occupied territories. Therefore, the expert concludes, none of this aligns with the Trump administration’s claims that Russia is ready to compromise.
“There were also statements (ed. – by U.S. Vice President Vance) suggesting that Putin initially wanted to install a puppet regime, but has now abandoned that goal. But these ‘achievements’ are thanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces — Trump had nothing to do with it. All of this happened because the blitzkrieg failed back in February–March 2022, when Russia’s original goal was to quickly overthrow Zelensky’s government and install a puppet regime,” adds Maksym Yali.
