Political analyst Samuel Charap commented on whether the current peace negotiations are truly stalled over territorial issues and whether Trump genuinely believes that Ukraine can restore its borders, Politeka reports.
He shared his views on the Dialogues program with Ruslan Bortnik.
“I saw it as trolling Putin, to be honest. He’s trolling Putin. He’s trying to provoke him, kind of toying with him—without insulting him outright, but still humiliating him in a way. Without mentioning his name, he called Russia a paper tiger and said Ukraine can take everything back. That’s not what they want to show on Channel One (Russian state TV). Putin doesn’t like it, but I don’t know whether Trump will change his approach. Still, I don’t think Trump is operating based on some super-secret intelligence that’s unavailable to the rest of us,” explained Samuel Charap.
In the expert’s opinion, the main issue now is the balance of exhaustion. However, he emphasizes, calculating this balance is difficult because there are too many variables and unreliable data: how much more human resource Russia is willing to spend on the war, what the real mobilization reserve of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is, how much ammunition each side has and will have, who will be more effective with drones—all of that changes daily.
“It’s unclear whether Russia is depleting itself fast enough for this to ultimately become a Pyrrhic gain—meaning that they would lose so much that they effectively lose the war,” Charap stresses.
Nevertheless, he notes that if you look at statements, for example, by Vice President Vance, it seems the Trump administration still believes that, for Russia, it all comes down to territorial issues. However, the expert argues that controlling Donetsk Oblast is unlikely to be Russia’s main goal in its war against Ukraine.
