Political analyst Ruslan Bortnyk explained that Trump sees potential for ending the war in Gaza, but not in Ukraine. Therefore, until there is some progress, he will remain on the sidelines of the peace process, Politeka reports.
He shared these insights in his blog.
According to the expert, the main issue in the U.S. right now is the shutdown — the budget for the next fiscal year, which began on October 1, still hasn’t been approved. This is a major problem, as there is a fierce standoff between Republicans and Democrats.
The second issue, he continues, is Gaza, because Trump’s peace plan regarding that conflict has potential, and the active phase of hostilities has currently stopped.
The third area Trump is focusing on, the expert adds, is a possible military operation against Venezuela, followed by a planned visit to China. And somewhere in the background lies the Russia-Ukraine war.
“Because Trump’s peaceful approach has been ineffective, Russia has gained more time to continue its offensive in Ukraine and carry out these barbaric strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure. And until either Ukraine, Russia, or Europe shows some willingness to take the first steps or make compromises, Trump won’t pay attention to this situation,” Bortnyk explains.
This is understood in the Office of the President (of Ukraine) as well, he continues, which is why — after the missile and drone strike on Lviv — Zelensky proposed a unilateral ceasefire in the air. According to the expert, this is an attempt to attract Trump’s attention and demonstrate that Ukraine is ready to make concessions, and that it’s time to pressure Russia.
“This is an attempt to bring Trump back into the dialogue. He hasn't responded publicly yet, but I think Ukraine’s position will be conveyed to him. And I don’t rule out that a reaction will follow,” Bortnyk concludes.
