Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that despite the challenges, President Zelensky succeeded in convincing Donald Trump not to surrender Donbas, but rather to stop the fighting, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this in his blog.

"Financial Times correspondent Christopher Miller wrote that during a tense meeting at the White House on Friday, Trump urged Zelensky to accept Russia's terms for ending the war, warning that Putin would destroy Ukraine if it didn’t comply. Well, it’s actually interesting — how can Putin destroy Ukraine if he hasn’t managed to do so yet, while Russian forces are suffering enormous losses? This is acknowledged by The Economist, leading media outlets, Western intelligence, experts, journalists, and the political establishment. So how exactly could he? If this is true, then it’s merely a retransmission of Russian propaganda. That simply can’t happen. Putin cannot destroy Ukraine by military means," Musiienko asserted.

Moreover, according to him, and as Financial Times reports, the conversation during that meeting repeatedly turned into heated exchanges. Trump insisted on ceding Donbas to Putin, but ultimately, he was persuaded to support a freeze of hostilities along the front line. Later, the U.S. President denied putting any pressure on the Ukrainian President or delegation regarding territorial concessions, while Zelensky made a firm statement that nothing would be gifted to Russia.

"What’s key here? That Ukraine managed to regain its positions. This is a victory for the Ukrainian delegation in the negotiations. We were truly able to stand our ground, based on our national interests. This is well-deserved. This is important and powerful," Musiienko emphasized.

As for Putin telling Trump during a phone call about his desire to take the entire Donetsk region without a fight, the expert notes — this is understandable, and we already saw it before their meeting in Alaska; it couldn’t have been otherwise. But the most important thing, the expert stresses, is that Trump rejected this idea after meeting with Zelensky and began talking about freezing the war along the front line as a precondition for further peace talks — something Ukraine has long agreed to.
