Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman stated that Trump has learned lessons from his previous meeting with Putin and is now approaching negotiations differently — aiming to stop the war and insisting on preliminary conditions, according to Politeka.
He shared this in his blog.
"Let’s put it this way. Trump never promised to return all our territories. He said his goal was to end the war. And look at the outcome of the meeting in Washington — he wrote a post that didn’t say Ukraine should give up the Donetsk region just because it’s Russian-speaking. He didn’t write that. What did he write? He demanded a ceasefire along the front line. That’s it. Full stop. Along the front line.
So, did he accept Putin’s position? No. Did he use the Tomahawk the way he intended to? Yes, exactly how he intended. Not the way we intended. He had something completely different in mind. Trump. Trump uses the threat of giving Tomahawks as a weapon — and Putin understood that," explains Mikhail Sheitelman.
As the expert recalls, after the Alaska meeting, Trump was insulted by Putin’s behavior — as he refused to meet with Zelensky. After that, Trump began ignoring statements from the Kremlin. Whitkoff was no longer sent to Moscow, Russian officials were not invited to summits, the White House loudly threatened to supply Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, Trump even announced tariffs on China, and so on.
In the end, Sheitelman states, Trump got what he wanted — Putin came crawling back asking for negotiations. So now we are expecting the next round, but this time it comes with conditions. That is, the expert explains, the meeting in Alaska had no prior conditions — Putin received an advance. But now, Trump’s and Putin’s aides must reach an agreement first — and only then will there be a personal meeting.
"That’s why I’m not at all sure this meeting will take place. Not yet. And when will it happen? There is no date. Back then, in Alaska, Trump immediately said, ‘I want to meet next week.’ And what is he saying now? The first round of negotiations between Rubio and the Russians will be next week. And it still hasn’t been scheduled. Yes, Rubio spoke with Lavrov, but nothing has been officially announced," concludes Mikhail Sheitelman.
