Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that U.S. sanctions against Lukoil and Rosneft are finally real pressure on Putin to achieve a ceasefire — although it’s not certain they will work, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this in his blog.

“Indeed, at last there are sanctions — though not yet against the gas extraction sector, but against oil refining and oil itself. Of course, this is an addition to those hellish sanctions that Ukraine is applying by striking oil refineries. Undoubtedly, that’s good. Plus, this is at least some real signal, a real action from the Trump administration to show at least minimal pressure on Putin,” says Oleksandr Musiienko.

The expert notes that the U.S. still refuses to accept Russia’s demand that the agenda of the Budapest meeting be the same as the one in Alaska — no, Washington wants a ceasefire. Trump himself, Musiienko adds, once again confirmed this, including at his meeting with the NATO Secretary General, stressing that Russia must enter negotiations with the goal of ending hostilities.

“And apparently, the situation in which a truce between Hamas and Israel was established is ultimately leading the U.S. to become more engaged in negotiation processes and to take more action aimed at at least exerting some pressure on Putin to make him ready to stop the fighting,” Musiienko emphasizes.

Of course, the expert warns, sanctions are not a panacea — they do not guarantee 100% that the Kremlin will immediately agree to negotiations. But it’s at least something, since previously there wasn’t even that. Earlier, the Trump administration hesitated and did not impose such measures. Therefore, Putin, Musiienko concludes, saw this and believed he could continue his terror in Ukraine and impose his own agenda. But now, the U.S. has set a condition: without a ceasefire, there will be sanctions — and they have sent a clear signal that their position is unwavering.
