The head of the Hungarian community in Kyiv, Tibor Tompa, explained that although Orbán is a pro-Russian politician, Hungary is economically dependent on the EU, and therefore he is forced to vote for sanctions against Russia, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this in the program “Free Media Space.”

“For the 18th and 19th sanction packages, Orbán ultimately voted in favor — just as he did for all the previous ones. And why? He is currently the only openly pro-Russian politician who, although he says that Hungary could literally leave the European Union in a year or two, that’s not true. Economically speaking, Hungary depends on the EU dozens of times more than on Russia,” Tibor Tompa emphasized.

As the guest of the program noted, Russia does provide Hungary with cheap oil and gas, but one should not forget that 75% of Hungary’s economy is tied to the European Union. And whenever an issue arises, he added, Hungary’s dependence on the EU — and especially on Germany — becomes evident.

“If it weren’t for EU subsidies, Hungary under Orbán’s rule would already be facing annual recessions. Every year. In other words, the economy is sustained by the European Union — and that’s the whole answer as to why, in the end, he votes the way he does,” Tompa explained.

The guest of the program also reminded that Orbán has been in power continuously for 15 years, and if counting his first term, for a total of 19 years. During this long period, he has driven Hungary into unprecedented economic hardship. According to him, Hungary has the highest inflation and the highest household price for the same Russian natural gas that Orbán treasures so much — even higher than in Ukraine.
