International relations specialist Serhiy Tolstov assessed the risks that Trump might lose interest in establishing peace in Ukraine if Democrats win the congressional elections, Politeka reports.

He discussed this on the program “Antishow” with Ruslan Bortnyk.

“About the elections. It seems to me that we shouldn’t get distracted from personal analysis. Trump is a very unusual person. Trump can do whatever he wants. Trump can make any decision. If in Ukraine, for example, there was a parliament and a Constitutional Court that could make any decision, and if in England at one time the Privy Council could make any decision and push it through Parliament, then in the U.S., Trump is a person who can make any decision. And it is unlikely that Trump will rely on the opinion of Congress if he controls at least the Senate,” Tolstov explains.

Therefore, the expert states, nothing will change if in the fall of 2026 the House of Representatives has a Democratic majority — unless, of course, Trump manages to redraw districts in favor of Republicans before then. American experts, he notes, believe that Trump will not have enough time before the next elections to redistribute districts in a way that increases the share of potential Republican members of the House.

“Well, let’s assume the House of Representatives has a Democratic majority. Will it be proactive? Well, perhaps it will put forward some initiatives. But in the same way, Republicans, having a majority in the House under Biden, put forward initiatives for a plan for Ukraine’s victory, which the chairs of three House committees signed on to. And what? Where is this plan now? This plan exists only in the collection published by my institute,” Tolstov states.

According to the program’s guest, what matters is not whether Trump will lose interest in resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war after the congressional elections in the fall of 2026, but whether he can nevertheless achieve a cessation of hostilities now.
