Political analyst Oleksandr Novokhatsky explained that Ukraine is not just a crossroads of worlds — it controls key trade and transport corridors of the continent, and Russia wants to deprive us of this, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on the “7 Steps” channel.

“What is Ukraine’s geopolitical function? For many years it was believed that Ukraine is a crossroads of worlds, a transit territory. Some said it was a buffer zone, others called it a frontier, some kind of protective belt for the West against eastern barbarians. In fact, we all forget one thing: Ukraine is a unique, self-sufficient phenomenon on a civilizational and cultural scale. Accordingly, our role in this world is somewhat different. We are supposed to play the role of a civilizational and cultural leader in the Baltic–Black Sea macrocluster — that is, from the Baltic countries, from the Baltic coastline down to the Black Sea,” Oleksandr Novokhatsky explains.

Moreover, he notes, the Baltic–Black Sea cluster is the very same route “from the Varangians to the Greeks,” the functioning of which was once ensured by Kyivan Rus. In addition, the expert adds, the territory of modern Ukraine has long served as a link between the Chinese world and European culture via the Silk Road.

If we rely on this model of Ukraine’s geopolitical role, the guest points out, then there are no questions about what role Ukraine should play, what kind of army it should have, and what functions it must perform.

“The only issue is that in all these scenarios I’m talking about, Russia has no place. And this entire war we are experiencing is a consequence of Russia’s desire to gain control over the territories that fit into this macro-geopolitical vision. They want to replace us in controlling these trade corridors. Either we do this, or Russia does,” Oleksandr Novokhatsky concludes.
