Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained that with this energy truce, Trump demonstrated that he is capable of reaching an agreement with Russia, but for Ukraine nothing changes — the enemy has stockpiled missiles and is preparing new strikes, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on his blog.
“Why is this a trick? Because we understand that announcing a 7-day truce is precisely the period that Russia has traditionally used to accumulate missiles and drones for a new massive attack. That is, between major Russian strikes there was traditionally a 7-day gap. During that time, they still carried out attacks, just as they continue to do now, but not against energy infrastructure. Therefore, Putin’s agreement to an energy truce means nothing from a military-technical standpoint. This is a traditional period for stockpiling weapons,” Ruslan Bortnik explains.
Moreover, the expert notes that from February 1, a new wave of Arctic cold entered Ukraine, meaning that right after the end of the energy truce, no one can guarantee the absence of strikes on energy infrastructure.
“This is a very artificial, very virtual truce that in reality does not change the balance of things. Whether this agreement existed or not, most likely during these 7 days we would have seen a certain pause in Russian strikes anyway, because Russia would have been accumulating forces to strike at the peak of the cold,” Ruslan Bortnik asserts.
Trump, the expert explains, used this energy truce to show that he can negotiate with Russia — that it is possible to make deals with it, that it is capable of entering into agreements and even observing them with regard to Ukraine. In other words, he concludes, this is an attempt to make the U.S.–Russian negotiation track the leading one and to position Moscow as a negotiating party in this process.
