Political strategist Mykhailo Sheitelman commented on the disqualification of Heraskevych from the Olympic Games over a memorial helmet featuring images of Ukrainian athletes killed as a result of Russia’s attack, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on his blog.
“The new symbol of the Olympics is not the Olympic rings but five zeros. These are absolute zeros — the people who make such decisions,” Mykhailo Sheitelman emphasized.
Nevertheless, he notes that a wave of support is rising. Ukrainian media are writing about the situation, and Ukrainian footballers recorded a very moving address to the world at the Lokomotyv stadium, destroyed by Russian bombs, saying that sport cannot be separated from politics when politics means the killing of children and athletes. According to the expert, it is only Russians who constantly shout that sport and politics should not be mixed, yet at the Olympic Games flags are displayed, athletes compete under them, and the anthem of the champion country is played — all of which is politics.
“The Olympics are outside politics? Then why do countries march at the opening ceremony with their names on placards? How is that outside politics? Otherwise they would all walk in one crowd. If it’s outside politics, then go to the circus. A wave of support for this idea seems to be just beginning. The statement by our athletes from Lokomotyv stadium didn’t just move me — it fired me up with fighting spirit. A global wave could grow out of such a statement if athletes around the world responded,” Mykhailo Sheitelman commented.
He also stressed that the International Olympic Committee targeted not just one Ukrainian athlete but several. In particular, he said, Oleh Handei was banned from competing in a helmet bearing a quote from Lina Kostenko — “Where there is heroism, there is no final defeat” — and Kateryna Kotsar was prohibited from wearing a helmet with the inscription “Be brave like Ukrainians.” It gives the impression, he concluded, that other teams have no motivational slogans, yet the IOC bans them only for Ukrainians — so as not to offend Russians.
