Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained why it is difficult for Ukraine to intercept Russian ballistic missiles and stated that Europe must begin producing missiles for Patriot systems, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

According to the expert, Germany’s foreign minister said that Europe does not have many missiles left for Ukraine. Currently, interceptors for shooting down ballistic missiles are being supplied to Ukraine from the United States directly off the production line—that is, newly manufactured.

“So it’s not a very reassuring forecast. Europeans need to ramp up production, because this is also about their own security. That is why the issue of producing missiles for MIM-104 Patriot directly in Europe for Ukraine’s needs—and not only Ukraine’s—is extremely important. This was discussed last week. Ukraine’s defense minister, Fedorov, is raising this issue precisely so that we receive more missiles,” Oleksandr Musiienko claims.

During the latest attack on the night of February 17, the expert notes, the Russians mainly launched cruise missiles, which can be intercepted by F-16s, Mirage aircraft, NASAMS, and IRIS-T. However, if the enemy carries out ballistic missile strikes, he emphasizes, Ukraine specifically needs Patriot and the French-made SAMP/T systems.

“The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine provided statistics showing that in January, Russia launched 91 ballistic missiles at Ukraine—the highest monthly figure since the start of the war. Imagine that for such a number of missiles, at least 182 interceptor missiles are effectively required. At least, I emphasize. In other words, to shoot down all these missiles, 182 Patriot missiles are needed, because that’s the rule—that’s how it technically works. Two interceptors per one enemy ballistic missile. So you can understand what stockpiles need to be built up,” Oleksandr Musiienko explained.
