Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained that involving Europeans in the negotiations is positive in terms of security guarantees, but the key point is to ensure that the United States does not withdraw from the process, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

“The distinctive feature of this meeting is that Europeans arrived — national security advisers from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy. They held a meeting on the evening of February 17 with the Ukrainian and American delegations. Of course, the Europeans are trying to coordinate their positions,” Oleksandr Musiienko noted.

According to the expert, there is little information available, but it was likely about security guarantees, the possibility of deploying troops in Ukraine after the signing of an agreement, and discussions of the conditions under which Europe could continue supporting Ukraine.

However, he emphasizes that this could turn into a trap. In particular, the expert warns that if by June there is no decision at least on a ceasefire, the United States may shift responsibility for settling the Russian-Ukrainian war onto Europe as a mediator. At the same time, there are doubts that Europeans will be able to support Ukraine for a long time without the U.S. There are statements, but the necessary actions are lacking — especially given that even the 20th sanctions package is stalling.

“You see, there is an advantage in the Europeans’ visit, but there are also pitfalls, so we need to speak realistically about them as well. The U.S. position is important to us. Yes, there is pressure on Ukraine, but at least if they remain in the negotiation process, it forces the Russians into some kind of discussions and talks. Will this be the case with the Europeans? I doubt it. As of today, despite calls from European countries to resume dialogue with Putin, we do not see any steps coming from that side,” Oleksandr Musiienko concluded.
