Hungarian political analyst Sándor Seremet explained that for a long time there was no one in Hungary’s political life besides Viktor Orbán, but now Péter Magyar has emerged — not a systemic opposition figure, but a breath of fresh air, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on the program “Dialogues” with Ruslan Bortnik.
“Orbán is, first and foremost, a figure of stability. That is, he represents a stable, well-grounded choice who has proven himself over several cycles. In a way, he himself symbolizes stability and the fight for national interests. Péter Magyar, on the other hand, is like a new wave,” Seremet explains.
According to the guest of the program, Magyar is not a systemic opposition figure; he did not take part in previous elections. In fact, he is part of the system, but brings a breath of fresh air. For young people, Seremet says, Magyar communicates the right messages through the right platforms — that Hungary’s national interests must be upheld, while also fighting corruption and the stagnant, inefficient system.
“He emerged as a non-system figure who understands the system, given that he was quite closely connected to it. Accordingly, he does not completely contradict what exists here, but represents a kind of upgrade to a system in which many Hungarians have felt comfortable for quite a long time. And it is important to understand that a very large percentage of his electorate consists of people who will be voting for the first time in their conscious lives. As a result, apart from the Fidesz party and Prime Minister Orbán, there have not really been other figures in the political spectrum for them,” Seremet says.
Yes, the guest notes, Magyar can be compared to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, when many people voted for him in the 2019 elections for the first time in their lives. The difference, however, is that Ukraine’s current president was already well known and had long been on television screens. Magyar, he emphasizes, was largely unknown to Hungarians who were not interested in politics, making him a truly new face.
