Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman said that the old world order was based on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, but that Russia has destroyed this foundation through its actions, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on his blog.
“I don’t believe the old world can be restored. I don’t believe it can be repaired. Let’s take, for example, the recent statement by Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev claimed that Ukraine is allegedly trying to create its own nuclear weapons, with France and Britain helping it, and that Russia is ready to carry out nuclear strikes against Ukraine. Have you heard such a statement? This is an example of a broken world — the world we were used to, the one we lived in,” Sheitelman argues.
As he explains, the world after World War II was based on the Charter of the United Nations, and the UN system relied on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The idea, the expert continues, was that the five nuclear powers sitting on the UN Security Council would manage disputes among themselves and would not target other countries that neither possess nor seek to develop nuclear weapons.
Therefore, he emphasizes, Medvedev’s threats to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine constitute a direct violation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which states that nuclear-armed states do not have the right even to threaten non-nuclear states. In the event of such a threat, the expert adds, other nuclear powers are obligated to stop this aggression.
“In other words, American, British, French, and Chinese troops should have been here today to stop the Russians after this statement by Medvedev, the second-ranking official in Russia. But we do not see that. There is no longer a Non-Proliferation Treaty, so of course we will have nuclear weapons. How else? Either Russia will not have nuclear weapons, or we will. Otherwise, what kind of independence does Ukraine have? Either take them away from Russia without our participation — take them away however you want — or we will create them. How else? Are we supposed to endure all this for a second time? No,” concludes Mikhail Sheitelman.
