Israel Defense Forces officer Igal Levin said that, in one form or another, the war between Iran and Israel has been going on for a long time. Preparations for a “hot phase” had been underway, and now things are progressing better than expected, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on Valerii Savchuk’s program “Different People.”
“Israel already had experience — it carried out strikes against Iraq and bombed a nuclear reactor. But on this scale, this is the first time. Previously, when Israel flew long distances to carry out bombings, these were one-off actions, as in the case of Iraq. But to conduct a full-scale military campaign… The last time Israel fought another state was in the 1980s against Syria. Back then, the Israeli army entered Lebanon, the Syrian army entered as well, and there were clashes,” Levin noted.
As for the effectiveness of Israel’s air defense against Iran, he said that engineers should deliver their verdict based on statistics; everything else is speculation and empty talk. Nevertheless, the military officer emphasized that even the best missile defense system can be penetrated — it’s a matter of mathematics.
Overall, he stated that the war against Iran is a very long story for Israel — decades of a cold war, limited or, as journalists say, hybrid, involving intelligence operations. Israelis assassinated Iranian nuclear scientists, while Iranians fought through Hamas and Hezbollah. Now it has entered a hot phase. The guest also recalled 2006–2007, when Israeli newspapers were already writing about plans for a war against Iran and its missile program — meaning it had been planned since the 2000s.
“The military outcome is based on the worst-case scenario. Everyone understood that it could be much worse than what is happening now. But the military campaign against Iran is going much better than expected,” Levin emphasized.
