Political expert and military officer Oleksandr Musienko stated that Ukraine needs to operate in space, including developing its own missile defense systems to counter Russian ballistic threats, reports Politeka.

He shared this in his blog.

According to Musienko, citing MP Venislavskyi, Ukraine has launched carrier rockets into space twice and already possesses the technical capability to counter enemy attack systems, engage them in space, and must continue developing its own kinetic missile interception systems, such as the “Oreshnik.”

“Indeed, missiles fly in the upper layers of the atmosphere, especially when we talk about medium-range ballistic missiles. Intercepting them there reduces risks. The US THAAD missile defense system works on the same principle, as does the sea-based AEGIS system. And, of course, we need to develop our own systems to intercept various aerial attack targets, including such missiles,” Musienko explains.

However, he suggests that focusing solely on the “Oreshnik” is not advisable, as Russia has yet to prove that this missile is truly medium-range. For instance, Iran, he notes, struck a British-American base 4,500 km away, proving that this missile can cover such a distance—something Russia has not demonstrated. Therefore, he emphasizes the need to concentrate on ballistic missile interception, develop domestic systems, and reduce dependence on the American Patriot system.

“It is equally important to advance our missile and space programs, leveraging partners and capabilities. Yes, we need to be in space. Space technologies encompass six to seven related industries, which provide a cumulative effect on the national economy. It is crucial to develop these intelligently and innovatively, retaining talented people here in Ukraine. This must undoubtedly be in our strategic focus,” Musienko concludes.
