Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman stated that the Easter ceasefire was fake anyway, but what’s interesting is that Trump didn’t ask for it and didn’t even notice it—meaning it was something Putin needed, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on his blog.
Summing up the Easter ceasefire, the expert notes that the General Staff reported that the Russians violated the ceasefire 29,300 times. But the most interesting question is why Putin proposed it in the first place. As the expert recalls, last year things were very different: in order not to anger Trump, Putin announced a partial energy ceasefire, not a full one.
“But this year it’s different. This year, Trump wasn’t even in the picture. Trump has his own separate agenda on the other side of the world. So why did Putin suddenly decide a few days ago to declare this ceasefire for a day and a half? For the first time in history, Putin announced this Easter ceasefire not as a PR move. Some said he wanted to show Trump that he genuinely seeks peace. No—Trump didn’t even notice. You heard it yourselves, right? Trump didn’t say a word about this ceasefire anywhere. Well, obviously, he’s got other things on his mind—he’s thinking about MMA fights,” Mikhail Sheitelman comments.
According to the expert, for the first time Putin asked for a ceasefire not for appearances, but for himself—because things are going very badly for him in every respect. In other words, he explains, it was important for Putin that there be no Ukrainian strikes on Russia during Easter, since people there increasingly associate the holiday personally with the president.
“Putin was genuinely afraid of major strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces that Russians would perceive as a blow against Putin himself. That would be it—time to write Putin off, like Orbán. That’s what he was afraid of. Because overall, listen, all these Remeslo… even if he was sent to a psychiatric hospital, people still heard what he said first. Millions of people in Russia read his posts. Gubarev’s interview with Dud—millions of views already—and that’s a direct anti-Putin statement, where Putin is called a puppet. Yes, they’re already planning to imprison Gubarev in Russia, but Putin knows that opposition to him is brewing and building up. For now, maybe not among the general public, but in a sense among the elite. Gubarev and Remeslo are part of the Russian elite. The pressure is building there, and Putin feels it,” explains Mikhail Sheitelman.
