Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained that Russian forces lack the capacity to create a buffer zone along the border, while in the Sumy region the enemy is being detected and destroyed, Politeka reports.

According to the expert, the information first appeared from a TSN journalist claiming that Sumy could end up in partial encirclement, but later a spokesperson for the Joint Forces grouping denied it, explaining that Russian troops had not advanced that deeply. However, he notes that the terror against Sumy continues, as the enemy cannot advance on the front line—there is a stalemate and heavy losses—so Russian forces resort to other methods.
“Russians are focusing on strikes, on terror against the civilian population, especially targeting settlements closer to the border or the line of contact. As a result, we see how Sumy is suffering. Strikes on Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk region,” Oleksandr Musiienko emphasizes.
According to the expert, the enemy is trying to probe Ukraine’s defensive lines, including in the Sumy region, as last year the Kremlin announced plans to create a buffer zone. However, he notes that there is a reason why Russian forces did not begin creating such a zone in the Chernihiv region—they lack the capability to conduct assaults from the Bryansk region and do not have sufficient resources for so many objectives. Even when Russian troops manage to advance and entrench themselves, Ukrainian units detect and eliminate them.
“But there is also a psychological aspect. The enemy understands that such actions can provoke and enable an information-psychological operation. Russian incursions into the Sumy region are actively accompanied by such operations, with messages being spread that Sumy is under imminent threat and that they will advance further, in order to demoralize. The Defense Forces are keeping the situation under control. There are additional units that will counter the enemy in this direction. But, of course, it is clear that Russia wants to stretch our defensive line, to shift our focus of attention, and to force us to redeploy additional forces to the Sumy region,” Oleksandr Musiienko explains.
