Political strategist Mykhailo Sheitelman stated that former President Donald Trump had already begun to see Putin as an obstacle to peace, and that this conviction only strengthened after his meeting with President Zelenskyy at the Vatican, Politeka reports.

He shared his thoughts in a blog post.

According to Sheitelman, threats of sanctions alone will not achieve much — it’s time to actually impose some, so that Putin genuinely engages in the peace process. Nonetheless, he emphasizes, Trump is finally acknowledging Russia’s guilt, and he has done so several times already. There was a post with the words “Vladimir, STOP!”, a statement made aboard a plane expressing disappointment over Russian shelling, and a call for Putin to come to the table and sign a peace agreement.

“In other words, he continued his anti-Putin rhetoric — thank God. And we’ve managed to keep him balanced for several days now, without all those erratic shifts of blame from one side to the other,” Sheitelman noted.

He also pointed out that Trump spoke positively about his meeting with Zelenskyy at the Vatican, calling it wonderful and praising the Ukrainian president for working hard, becoming calmer, and being genuinely interested in peace. The front pages of major Western media, Sheitelman said, featured photos from the Pope’s funeral and the Zelenskyy-Trump meeting, with striking headlines suggesting that the Pope’s final act was arranging peace talks.

“Why was Zelenskyy moved to the front row at the funeral next to Trump and Macron? I thought it might have been the Pope’s will — that he could have written it down or told his aides, since there’s a funeral planner in charge of such arrangements. I believe he asked to arrange those talks at his funeral. The man had been dying for months and saw peace as his mission. He could have requested this directly, if not literally, then at least asked that his funeral be used as an opportunity to spark peace talks. That would be a worthy legacy,” Sheitelman reflected.
