US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that peace talks in Ukraine will enter a crucial stage next week.

According to Rubio, the parties are now closer to a peace agreement than they have been in the past three years of full-scale war.

"There are reasons for optimism, but there are also reasons for realism. We are close, but not close enough (to an agreement)," Rubio said on NBC's Meet the Press.

Rubio said that in the coming week the United States will assess progress in resolving the war and decide whether to continue participating in the peace process or switch to other issues.

The Secretary of State added that the Trump administration has not introduced new sanctions against Russia, as it wants to bring the conflicting parties closer together.

Recall that on Saturday, Zelensky and Trump met in the Vatican. The Ukrainian leader said that he had time to discuss a lot with the US president and called the meeting "good."
