Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained that the Kremlin is not intimidating everyone with threats of strikes on Kyiv for no reason. Since Lavrov also spoke with Rubio, it is possible that the United States will pressure Ukraine into making concessions, Politeka reports.
He discussed this on his blog.
Following the Russian Foreign Ministry’s warnings about strikes on Kyiv, the expert notes, embassies and international organizations became seriously concerned, especially since the latest attack was also demonstrative in nature: missiles flew over Maidan and Saint Sophia Cathedral, and everyone saw them. In other words, he explains, it was a demonstration of Russia’s ability to launch missiles at Kyiv without difficulty.
“But there was also the phone call between Lavrov and Rubio. The last time this happened was when a three-day ceasefire was announced for Victory Day. So I do not rule out that the same pattern is being used again: a public threat, a call to the American government, and then pressure from the United States on the Ukrainian government aimed at securing certain decisions. It is a kind of pass to the U.S. administration so that it increases pressure on Ukraine in order to achieve certain decisions, possibly once again related to a ceasefire or new demands for Ukrainian troops to withdraw from the Donetsk region,” Ruslan Bortnik explains.
In addition, the expert adds, the Russians have apparently decided to also use the Belarus narrative — Ukraine’s warnings about the threat of a possible attack from Belarus — and are now merging it all together with the shelling of Kyiv, thereby escalating tensions.
“But it seems to me that this whole story was not invented merely to create panic in Kyiv among the population and international organizations. It seems to me that this whole story was designed to force Ukraine into making new political concessions and decisions, just as happened with the ceasefire on May 9,” Ruslan Bortnik claims.
