Political strategist Mykhailo Sheitelman said that Europe has decided to try to bring Putin to the negotiating table, but its initiatives are unlikely to succeed, according to Politeka.
He discussed the issue on his blog.
According to the expert, Bloomberg published a lengthy article reporting that Germany, France, and the United Kingdom have decided to develop a plan to engage Putin in negotiations, as he continues to resist ending the war. The article also mentioned anonymous discussions about increasing pressure on the Kremlin.
“We can check that box. We’ve heard you. The United Kingdom, France, Germany. We know you’re preparing yet another peace plan, but honestly, you can put it in the same place where Crimeans advised the Russian leadership to put their gasoline ration coupons. Put your peace plan there in advance as well. That doesn’t mean, however, that there is no prospect for a peaceful settlement. It doesn’t. But, in my view, that will be decided in a completely different place,” Mykhailo Sheitelman commented.
The good news, the expert says, is that two meetings between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump are likely to take place in the coming weeks. The first meeting could happen at the G7 summit, while the second may take place at the NATO summit. U.S. officials have confirmed that Trump will attend.
“Last year, during the NATO summit, everyone was worried that Trump would clash with Zelenskyy, and the Europeans were somewhat shielding Zelenskyy, keeping him at a distance and only occasionally bringing him into Trump’s view to avoid a conflict. Now it will be the opposite. Zelenskyy is currently more favored by Trump than Europe is. Trump is already saying that Ukraine’s army is stronger than Europe’s armies, that Ukraine has the world’s best Unmanned Systems Forces. Trump says that Zelenskyy is difficult to deal with, but that he’s a good guy. Rubio has stated that the White House is working with a congressman on a bill introducing new sanctions against Russia. Suddenly, it turns out that Zelenskyy is now the favored partner, and it is Zelenskyy who may, at Merz’s request, help restore communication between the United States and the Europeans,” Mykhailo Sheitelman explained.
