Historian Yuri Felshtinsky explained that Russia is not only incapable of attacking Europe but is also unable to defeat Ukraine. He argues that once missiles begin striking Moscow on a large scale, the war will be ended either by Putin or by someone else, according to Politeka.
He made these remarks during Valerii Savchuk’s author program “Different People.”
“Putin has already lost the battle for Europe, but he does not understand it. He is simply incapable of understanding such things; perhaps he sees everything differently. But Putin has lost this battle. Russia will not be able to build a second land army and march into Europe. Russia has already failed to conquer Ukraine. Putin has already lost all of his battles. Ukraine has given Europe a very important understanding of what is happening and what Russia really is, as well as a crucial breathing space. Over these years, Europe has certainly become more vigilant, and there is now a common understanding that Russia represents the main threat to European security,” Felshtinsky argues.
More broadly, he says, Putin understands that the current situation will continue only until January 20, 2029, when a new U.S. president enters the White House, regardless of whether that person is a Democrat or a Republican. Therefore, the expert concludes, Putin will continue trying to force Ukraine’s defeat through brutal air strikes on civilian cities, primarily Kyiv, because nothing significant will change on the front line, where the conflict has become a positional war resembling World War I.
In addition, the program’s guest notes that Putin spent all of 2025 trying to secure Ukraine’s capitulation with the help of Trump but failed. Therefore, he argues, Ukraine will not capitulate and Russia will not conquer it. Moreover, he stresses that none of these actions bring Russia any closer to victory; all it can do is continue missile and drone attacks.
“But if Ukraine begins striking Moscow in response, this war will end within two weeks, and it will be ended not by Putin but by another person. For that to happen, however, Ukraine must be given the capability to strike Moscow with long-range missiles,” Yuri Felshtinsky emphasizes.
