Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88 in his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta. He had been receiving treatment for bilateral pneumonia and had previously been hospitalized.
On February 14, the pontiff was taken to Gemelli Hospital after experiencing symptoms of bronchitis. After five weeks, his condition stabilized, and he was allowed to return to the Vatican. However, CNN reported that after being discharged, he struggled with speaking due to breathing issues and underwent physiotherapy to regain his voice.
On April 20, Francis delivered the traditional Easter blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Before appearing publicly on Easter Sunday, he held a brief private meeting with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. He will be the first pope in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the cause of death was a stroke, irreversible cardiovascular collapse, and coma. The official time of death was 7:35 a.m. on April 21.
