A meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin may take place after the U.S. President's scheduled trip to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, which is set for next month.
When asked by journalists about the possibility of meeting Putin during his stay in Saudi Arabia, Trump responded, "It’s possible, but most likely not. I think we’ll meet with him shortly after that," CNN quoted him as saying.
The Middle East tour, planned for May 13–16, will be Trump’s second foreign trip since returning to the White House. Prior to that, he intends to visit Rome to attend the farewell ceremony for Pope Francis.
The U.S. President is pressuring both sides to reach a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine within the first 100 days of his new term.
Earlier, on April 17, following consultations in Paris, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the United States may withdraw from the negotiations if significant progress is not achieved in the coming days. This position has already been communicated to NATO allies.
Donald Trump also stated that the U.S. does not rule out pulling out of the process entirely if the parties fail to reach a consensus. While the country hopes for progress, Washington may “wash its hands” if no tangible results are seen.
Meanwhile, according to Axios, Trump’s Special Envoy for Middle Eastern Affairs, Steve Witkoff, who is also involved in the Ukraine negotiation process, is scheduled to meet with Putin on Friday, April 25.
Witkoff has already visited Russia three times as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts. After his latest visit, he stated that under a potential peace agreement, Russia could gain control over part of Ukrainian territory — “but not all of it.”
