Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko has commented on the statement made by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the possibility of a ceasefire being announced before the summer, according to Politeka.
He shared his thoughts on the matter in his blog.
The expert also notes that Starmer emphasized the ceasefire must be based on terms acceptable to all parties and must be a long-term solution — otherwise, it would leave Russia with the opportunity and means to return to aggression in the future, as has happened before.
"Essentially, Starmer is laying his cards on the table by stating that it has to be a long-term solution. This clearly indicates all the signs of a frozen conflict — there’s no other way to interpret this proposal," Musiienko remarks.
He further points out that Starmer mentioned the need for agreement from both sides, which could mean that Russia’s opinion must be taken into account regarding the deployment of foreign troops to Ukraine — a topic already being reported on by The Times. According to the expert, Britain is apparently reconsidering its stance on sending foreign military forces to Ukraine, likely in response to the Kremlin’s position.
"Starmer doesn’t reveal what will happen with security guarantees either. At the same time, he says all parties — including Russia — must agree. It’s clear that Russia would have to agree to a ceasefire, but under what terms? That’s the key issue here. Even Lavrov gave an interview to CBS, saying that Russia is ready to make a deal on Ukraine, but there are certain elements that need to be finalized. What elements? He doesn’t specify," Musiienko concludes.
